About Windlestone Nursery

Windlestone Nursery is a local garden centre, based just a few miles east of Bishop Auckland, just off the A689 to Darlington and Newton Aycliffe. We are an independent, traditional horticultural business offering a fast and friendly service.

With fresh, new stocks of seasonal bedding plants, perennials and shrubs arriving nearly every week throughout the year, you'll be sure to find the variety you're looking for at our garden centre. Windlestone Nursery is also well known locally for offering mature plants (known as large specimen plants, including exotic plants, palm trees and acers) to garden designers and landscapers as well as new build home owners in the area of Bishop Auckland, West Auckland, Wynyard, Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor.

We also stock one of the largest selections of ceramic, wooden, stone and plastic planters and pots in Durham - including larger options for the more mature plants. And you'll always find us well-stocked on a comprehensive range of compost and garden care products too from garden tools to fertilisers and a range of compost and gravel. We do not have a restaurant or gift shop as such on the premises.

Horticultural Advice

If you're happy to browse around our garden centre and already know what you're looking for, that's great - many experienced gardeners and top landscapers - both locally and from as far afield as Morpeth, Newcastle and Barnard Castle are among our regular customers. However if you need help selecting the right plants, trees or shrubs for your garden then our team is always on hand to assist.

Parking

We have fairly limited parking at our garden centre - there are around 7 parking spaces available inside the premises which has two large access gates, making it easy to drive through. The nursery is situated on a narrow lane however there is ample parking up the lane - please do try to park on the side closest to the nursery if possible.

Trolleys

Trolleys are available in the parking area outside. If you know you might be needing quite a few plants then we suggest you pick one up as you go in as we generally don't keep spare ones in the plants section and it's a bit of a walk back to the entrance. Our friendly team is on hand though should you need help.

Heavy goods

With regard to buying heavy bags of compost, gravel and stones at our garden centre - these are all conveniently located in the parking area where, once purchased, you can reverse your car right up and load everything into your boot.  Again, our team is on hand if you need a hand! And we offer a delivery service to areas such as Bishop Auckland, Darlington, Seaham, Tow Law and Newton Aycliffe

New one-way entry/exit system

Due to Covid, in 2020 we implemented a one-way entry/exit system. This means a slightly longer walk for customers via our new entrance - however it gives you an opportunity to browse around our lovely planters, garden furniture and ornaments sections to get new ideas for your garden - and of course find some great specials along the way!

The new entrance walkway is paved and easy for those with rollators or wheelchairs to access. There are small inclines/ramps in the nursery near the till and well as when you walk out into the outside area at the back of the nursery. This is where we keep all the shrubs, trees, bamboos and perennials. Again, there are shortcuts we can offer if you have walking difficulties.

Most bedding plants are displayed at waist height in the main glass-covered building, some are still displayed fresh off the delivery trolleys as you walk into the nursery.

Assistance for those with limited walking ability

In terms of access for those with limited walking ability - if you or someone you are with, would really battle to walk the extra 50m or so before entering the plant section,  then do speak to one of our team and we will make an exception to allow you to safely use the exit ramp as a shortcut directly into the garden centre.

We hope to welcome you at our nursery premises soon but do consider buying what you need online right here and right now - with the convenience of having it delivered right to your doorstep. If you need some advice or information before ordering, just give us a call.
